Different pathways of the second demographic transition in four East Asian societies: evidence from the 2006 and 2016 East Asian Social Surveys

Abstract This study uses the 2006 and 2016 East Asian Social Surveys to map value changes related second demographic transition in mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan. The examines trends attitudes towards cohabitation, childrearing, divorce over a 10-year period four societies. findings suggest that transition, if any Asia, is an uneven process between societies, China stands out as only society which had become more conservative, even after controlling for compositional differences population. In other three shifted be liberal. Moreover, finds little evidence on diffusion within given their similar across different sociodemographic groups. From ideational perspective, societies illustrated patterns of attitude regarding marriage family. behavioral do not always align with at macro level, especially China. More studies are needed understand nuanced shifts relationship Asia.
